Beginner Recreational  Kayak

We'll have you navigating the river with confidence in no time with easy paddling recreational kayaks. Topics include river reading and safety, efficient paddle technique, weather watching, basic rescue, and much more for creating a great day on the river – while having a great day on the river.

Duration: 3 to 5 hours - 6.2 miles
Location:  DRC Riverside Shop

Description:
During this lesson your instructor will teach you about the basics of recreational kayaking.  You will learn the paddle strokes needed to navigate rivers. You will learn kayak terminology and facts about the Dan River.  The instructor will also cover basic river reading including how to best navigate rapids, identify dangers, and avoid obstacles.  Further topics covered include what to do if you capsize and how to load a kayak for a day trip.
 

Beginner Tandem Canoe

There's a special romance to the canoe - and a special aggravation. Join us for a fun day of getting past the frustration to discover how to dance with your partner in a tandem canoe. Topics include river reading and safety, efficient paddle technique, weather watching, teamwork and basic self-rescue. Come prepared to get wet, have some fun, and gain some confidence on Class I moving water.

Up to 6 students (3 canoes) per instructor.
Duration: 3 to 5 hours
Location: DRC Riverside Shop
 

Cost: $160 per tandem team
- $100 per individual without partner

Whitewater Kayak

Duration: 3 to 5 hours- 6 miles
Location: DRC Riverside Shop

Each lesson is customized to the boater.  Common features of Whitewater instruction are the Wet Exit, The Roll, Peel Outs, and Eddying.  Terminology and boat outfitting are also covered.  Whitewater instruction requires that you have your own boat, skirt, paddle and helmet. Due to the nature of Whitewater instruction, individuals taking this course need to be ready to expend a good deal of physical energy and be comfortable being under water.
